Video Game Characters Push Back Against Republicans Blaming Them For Mass Shootings
With the classic red hat in his hands, Mario approached the podium. Streaming down his face, the plumber opened his mouth but couldn’t find any words. Mario stood, not alone but with dozens of video game characters from the various consoles of the world — collected in their stance to fight back against the Republicans blaming them for another mass shooting in the United States.
America is in mourning again after another mass shooting, followed by the typical cycle of the media plastering the killers names on television and Republicans jumping up and down saying there are no gun problems in the United States. Many on the right blamed “violent video games,” even though these games are played and available worldwide.
Tracer, a character from the elite force known as Overwatch, made this statement: “I have always said the world needs more heroes. Maybe the Republicans should pretend to be one just for a day. And finally change how easy it is for individuals to get weapons of mass destruction.”
It is easy to highlight the shooting games in the video game industry, but no study has found them to be the cause of these shootings. The GOP chooses to ignore the good video games do — how they can help develop problem solving skills, unite people from across the globe and take people to worlds they could never have imagined.
The game characters of the world are united in their stance that they are not at fault. America’s gun problem stems from easy access to deadly weapons, allowed to continue due to one side of the government’s greed, this according to Mario. He continued, “I collect coins everyday but I fear I’ll never be able to pay these Republicans what the NRA does. With that, these problems will only continue.”
