HBO Fury At Trump’s Plagiarism Of Game Of Thrones Poster, Democrats Fight Back
HBO has reacted furiously to Donald Trump’s social media team’s hijacking of the Game of Thrones style and fonts in the sadly comical, childish and rather disturbing ‘SANCTIONS ARE COMING’ poster issued from the White House last Friday.
The US President has clearly plagiarized the Game of Thrones style in the poster, substituting Trump’s threatening and aggressive message to the Iranians for the ‘winter is coming’ phrase from the original GoT poster.
To further add insult to HBO, ‘NOVEMBER 5’ was added below the main strap line, mimicking a release date but in this case referring to the day on which sanctions on Iran will resume after Trump broke America’s word and unilaterally pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) last May.
In a statement to NBC, the HBO spokesperson said, “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”
Further, HBO tweeted ‘How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?’ a reference to a powerful and violent tribe in Game of Thrones.
Undaunted by the annoyance of HBO at the misuse of the Game of Thrones branding, Trump has prepared more posters that plagiarize other successful brands. A poster specifically aimed at the caravan of South Americans fleeing the violence and poverty in their countries in the hope of crossing the border into the US is to be issued soon. In this Trump is dressed as Darth Vader, the infamous villain from Star Wars. His is depicted holding a light sabre. The strap line dominating this poster reads:
‘MAY THE BORDER FORCE BE WITH YOU’
Another soon to be issued by Trump is aimed at intimidating his ex lawyer and erstwhile confidante and bribe payer, Michael Cohen. This plagiarizes the famous poster promoting Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Cohen, now singing like a canary to the FBI about Trump’s little secrets will see himself depicted in the poster as the young Luke Skywalker standing beside a prison building. His shadow is cast onto the smooth surface of the wall behind him. In this case the shadow morphs into the form of Donald Trump. The strap line is amended from the original, stealing from the 1986 movie ‘The Fly’ and reads:
‘Stormy Wars – Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid!’
As a counter-balance to the above, the Democrats have published their own series of plagiarized posters. One mimics the famous poster used to promote the internationally successful movie ‘Bullitt’ starring Steve McQueen. In the Democrat’s version, President Trump is depicted dressed in black jeans and black roll neck jumper, wearing a shoulder holster and gun, one arm leaning forward as if reasting on a doorframe. The character looks mean and tough. The strapline has been altered from the original to read:
‘Donald Trump… BULL***TT.’
In another, the poster used to promote the movie ‘MOON’ is adapted. The original showed a spaceman, helmet off with the strapline:
‘250,000 miles from home, the hardest thing to face… Is yourself - MOON.’
This has been altered to an image of president Trump, naked except for a pair of speedos, and has the strapline:
‘250,000 lies from him, the hardest thing to face… Is your president – MORON’
From the writer’s perspective a better strapline for this poster would have been the one from the 2004 movie, Gladiatress which read:
‘Does my gluteus maximus look big in this?’
